Viral Train Video Falsely Linked to Bihar Police Recruitment Exam Death; Fact Check Reveals Passenger Survived and Incident Occurred in Andhra Pradesh
A viral video shared by several Congress leaders and social media users claiming that a Bihar Police recruitment candidate died inside an overcrowded train has been proven false. Metadata and eyewitness accounts revealed that the incident occurred near Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh and that the passenger survived, exposing widespread misinformation linked to examination-related protests.
The viral footage shows a man sitting on an upper berth suddenly experiencing seizure-like symptoms while fellow passengers attempt to revive him by giving him water and pouring water over his head. Messages accompanying the video claimed that a candidate traveling for the Bihar Police recruitment examination died inside the train amid severe overcrowding and that hundreds of people blocked railway tracks at Patliputra station in protest over train delays.
The Bihar Police recruitment examination was scheduled in two shifts on June 14 and June 17. According to reports, a large number of candidates reached Patliputra railway station on June 13. Angered by train delays, several aspirants staged protests, shouted slogans and blocked railway tracks. Miscreants also allegedly vandalized trains and resorted to stone-pelting, following which police intervened to restore railway operations and ensure the safety of passengers and property.
Several Congress leaders and official party social media accounts shared the viral video while alleging that a young candidate had died inside a crowded train. Congress national spokesperson and Working Committee member Supriya Shrinate shared the footage and wrote that she was speechless after watching a young man die in agony inside a packed train compartment. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, national spokesperson Atul Londhe Patil, Rao Narendra Singh and Srinivas Bhadravati Venkata, along with official social media handles including INC India, Indian Youth Congress, INC Bihar, Bihar Youth Congress and Madhya Pradesh Youth Congress, also circulated the video with similar claims regarding the condition of examination candidates in Bihar.
The footage was also widely shared on Facebook and Instagram, with users claiming that the incident occurred during protests by Bihar Police examination candidates at Patna railway station.
A detailed investigation revealed that an Instagram user identified as Mubarak Hussain had commented beneath the video uploaded on the official Congress Instagram account, claiming that he had recorded and originally posted the footage.
After being contacted, Mubarak Hussain, a resident of Assam, rejected the viral narrative. He stated that he boarded Vivek Express train number 22504 from Guwahati on June 10 while traveling to Kerala. According to him, the passenger seen in the viral video and several of his companions joined the journey the following day. Shortly before Srikakulam station, the man began suffering seizure-like symptoms and experienced a sudden drop in blood pressure. Hussain said the passenger appeared to be in a life-threatening condition, prompting him to record the incident.
Hussain shared metadata associated with the video, which showed that it was recorded in Srikakulam on June 11, 2026, at 6:31 p.m. The metadata established that the footage was not recorded in Bihar and could not have been connected to the June 13 events involving Bihar Police recruitment candidates.
Vivek Express operates from Dibrugarh in Assam to Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu over a four-day journey. During its route through Bihar, the train halts only at Kishanganj and does not pass through Patna or Patliputra stations.
When questioned about the man's reported death, Hussain stated that the passenger and his companions were addicted to intoxicating substances. He said that during the two-day journey, his own group would have breakfast while the others regularly consumed intoxicants. According to Hussain, before the seizure the man repeatedly demanded alcohol or narcotic medication from his friends. After suffering convulsions, he was laid down and appeared close to death. However, he regained consciousness within five minutes and immediately began demanding alcohol and drugs again. Hussain further claimed that the man attempted to harm himself and tried to leave the train.
Hussain stated that another video of the incident was recorded by his friend Ashikul Islam, who later uploaded it on Instagram with the claim that the passenger was attempting suicide because he could not obtain drugs. Metadata shared by Hussain indicated that this footage was recorded in Andhra Pradesh on June 11, 2026, at 6:49 p.m. This recording was made after the first video, when the passenger had already regained consciousness.
Hussain also provided a third video and its metadata. According to the information, the footage was recorded in Vizianagaram, Andhra Pradesh, on June 11, 2026, at 8:15 p.m., nearly two hours after the first recording. The man seen in the earlier video was visible alive in this footage.
Hussain maintained that the passenger had fully recovered and remained alive. He said that after everyone went to sleep, the man and his companions likely disembarked at Vijayawada Junction during the night. He also claimed that one of the passenger's friends said he worked as a security guard in Bengaluru.
When asked why an Instagram post had falsely claimed that the man died because he could not obtain drug injections inside the train, Hussain admitted that the misleading caption was intended to attract more views.
Efforts were made to independently verify the identity and present condition of the passenger by obtaining a contact number from Hussain and attempting to reach one of the man's friends. However, no response had been received at the time of publication, and the report is expected to be updated if additional information becomes available.
Following the circulation of the viral claims, East Central Railway issued an official clarification by quoting Rahul Gandhi's post and categorically denying the allegations. The railway authority stated that the incident had not occurred at Patliputra station and emphasized that no information regarding the death of any individual had been received from any source. The railway administration urged the public not to spread rumors or misinformation.
The episode highlights how misleading narratives amplified through social media and political platforms can rapidly distort facts surrounding sensitive public issues. Metadata analysis and eyewitness testimony established that the incident took place in Andhra Pradesh, not Bihar, and that the passenger shown in the video survived, exposing the viral claims of a death linked to Bihar Police recruitment chaos as false.
